A method for mechanically killing cover crops to optimize weed suppression

Article Abstract:

Cover crops suppress weed growth by providing a mulch on the soil's surface. While cover crops are usually killed with herbicides, mechanical methods prove to be more environmentally sound. To achieve this end, an undercutter was designed to kill cover crops by cutting their roots while keeping the aboveground biomass on the surface of the raised beds intact. Results indicate that only those weeds in mid-maturity and beyond were prone to being killed using this method. The undercutter also proved efficient in creating a thick, evenly-distributed mulch.

Management of natural Kentucky bluegrass-white clover pasture

Article Abstract:

A study on the management of Kentucky bluegrass-white clover pasture grazing for dairy cows revealed that soil aeration or harrowing treatments are not necessary for plant and livestock grazing management. It is recommended that for maximum dry matter (DM) and nutrient intakes, lactating cows can graze first leaving a prostgrazing mass of approximately 1,575 kilos of DM per hectare. Dry cows and heifers should follow closely leaving about 1,100 kilos of DM per hectare to result in consistent high quality and production of forage.
