Stockbrokers north east: strengths and pressures
Article Abstract:
Stockbrokers in north east England are enjoying favorable market conditions but they are concerned about the impact of the Crest electronic stock settlement system, especially smaller brokers. The city of Leeds is a major center in the region and four new stockbrokers have entered the market in this city in the year to May 1997. Brokers in the region have to compete against brokers from London, England. Execution-only operations are affecting the industry but there is disagreement as to how far this affects the industry.

Corporate sector does the business
Article Abstract:
The corporate sector of stockbroking in north east England has been affected by a diversification of the region's economic base away from heavy industry. There were 185 transactions completed in 1996 according to Price Waterhouse, a rise of 20 compared with 1995. Management buyouts have become more popular, as have buy-ins. Such transactions tended to be les common in the past due to a lack of managers with enough experience. There were 20 such transactions in 1996.
