A view from the chunnel
Article Abstract:
The English Channel Tunnel (Chunnel) being built between Dover, UK and Calais, France is scheduled to be opened for traffic on June 15, 1993. Tunneling through the chalk marl underneath the channel is expected to be completed by autumn 1992. The construction of the Chunnel is being done under the requirements of the Intergovernmental Commission and its Safety Authority. In addition, the Chunnel is abiding by the guidelines of the European Community Directive on Environmental Impact Assessment, which has necessitated over 100 technical studies on the environment, and this has added to the overall cost of the project. Construction is being down by Transmarche-Link, a consortium of construction companies. The results of construction have been good and the steady progress has served to ensure that needed finance continues to flow into the project.

Where does the Chunnel really lead?
Article Abstract:
The Channel tunnel (Chunnel) between Folkstone, UK and Coquelles, France is plagued by financial difficulties and delays in completing the rail and road infrastructure. The problems are the result of the sheer magnitude of the task undertaken in the areas of logistics, organization, and control. The Chunnel will broaden UK business horizons and revitalize the poor region of Northern France through the relocation of UK businesses and people. Northern France has abundant supplies of cheap land, but it also has high labor costs because of French labor regulations and national insurance contributions. Northern France is most appropriate as a relocation site for those businesses with low product value/weight ratios.
