A voice from inside
Article Abstract:
Nick Young, a former executive of accounting firm Clark Kenneth Levanthal, ran a bogus investment scheme from 1977 until 1990 when he was arrested and subsequently jailed for financial fraud. Young denies that he ever intended to defraud the investors who placed their money in his scheme, which involved placing funds purportedly intended for an international investment fund into horserace betting. He maintains that he truly felt that racing could provide a safe, tax-efficient investment return and notes that from 1977 to 1982, his investment scheme actually made an excellent return. Young explains that his problems began in 1982 when he lost a substantial amount of investors' money. Young admits that from then on he began to replace lost capital by using money from new investors. In 1990, unable to maintain the deception, he surrendered himself to the police and is now serving a four-year jail term.

In the fast lane to the top
Article Abstract:
Sheila Masters has had a distinguished career in the UK's accounting profession. She has been partner at KMPG for 10 years, a Council member of six years, chaired various Institute Committees and had secondments to the Treasury and the Dept of Health. She has become a memberof the National Health Service policy board and the Inland Revenue's managementboard. Masters does not believe that there is a glass ceiling that prevents women from advancing in the accounting profession, so long as they have the abilities to do. She also says that she was able to avoid any kind of discrimination at KMPG because of her becoming a topnotcher in the Institute ofTaxation examinations. Her success was attributed to her strength of character and commitment in getting a job done. She believes that self-confidence in one's abilities is essential as well as not being fazed by factors that threaten this confidence.
