Abbey after a dull year

Abbey National shares have been affected by concern over competition in the mortgage market. A sample of six brokers has assessed the company's shares and three rate the shares a hold, two rate them a buy and one rates them a sell. Holders include UBS which sees the mortgage market as likely to revive. Buyers include James Capel which sees the UK mortgage market as relatively stable, and Merrill Lynch which sees benefits from the acuisition of N and P. The seller is ABN AMRO Hoare Govett which perceives Abbey National shares as overvalued.

Barclays is underrated

Barclays saw a drop in its stock price due to problems arising from the sale of its equities activities. Three brokers from a sample of six rate the company's stocks a buy, one rates them a hold, and two rate them a sell. The sellers are UBS and Collins Stewart, while the holder is Lehman Brothers. The three buyers see the sale of BZW as a positive move, despite its impact on Barclays stock price. The buyers are Merrill Lynch, Salomon Smith Barney, and Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull.
