Charity Treasurer - An Accountant's Occupational Hazard
Article Abstract:
Charities are quick to warm up to accountants as the demand for their assistance is high. Financial management accounting is similar in charities to commercial businesses. However, they are fundamentally different being governed by different laws and motivated by service, not profits. Professional audits are generally not required. Reports are difficult to prepare as there are no standards. Report users are different for charities than commercial businesses. Value for money is difficult to account for. Professional assistance could provide much to the charity, especially in times where funds are scarce.
