Accounting for political change
Article Abstract:
The accountancy profession in Poland has not been seriously damaged by several decades of communism. Throughout this period, practitioners had continued to maintain their western perspectives and contacts. The profession's survival under the rigors of Stalinism and its revival after the collapse of communism is widely credited to Zdzislaw Paryzinski. He is the acknowledged leader of Polish chartered accountancy. He served as the director general of accountancy in the Polish finance ministry between 1951 and 1981, and is currently the vice president of accounting firm FinansServis at the age of 78. Paryzinski believes that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic are way ahead of other central and eastern European countries in accounting development because of their existing base of skilled people and their exposure to western market economies.
