Adm. Mullen opposes Navy fleet less than 281 vessels
Article Abstract:
Adm. Michael Mullen, chief of naval operations reported that the Navy fleet could not be permitted to slide to less than its low point of 281 ships and submarines without danger of the sea service being unable to perform its needed missions. The key fact is that planned retirement of existing ships and submarines in future means the Navy would require a robust shipbuilding program to prevent a further shrinkage in the fleet size.

Sen. Warner concerned Navy may not build enough ships
Article Abstract:
Senator John Warner, chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee and former secretary of the Navy, expresses his concern that the Navy may not build enough ships to maintain an adequate fleet size. He is concerned that the Navy may permit shipbuilding to weaken so much that the maritime service wouldn't be able to perform all the missions assigned to it by the president.
