Airborne Laser aims for 2008 shoot-down: Official
Article Abstract:
The Airborne Laser (ABL) program is on track to produce an aircraft that can shoot down a just-fired enemy missile with a laser by 2008. The achievement of the major milestone of being able to shoot down the boosting ballistic missile and the development of ABL will not only benefit the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) mission but will benefit other weapon-development programs at the same time.

Robots designed for a wide range of defense and security applications have evolved very rapidly and are overlapping other technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). One major aim of the Army Research Laboratory's robotics program is to give robots greater 'autonomous mobility' or the ability to maneuver independently of a human operator.
