All fall down(problems facing economies in South-East Asia)
Article Abstract:
Economies in South-East Asia have been affected by the devaluation of the Thai baht. Currencies face pressure and interest rates have been raised, while stock prices have fallen. The crisis could help bring about a necessary restructuring of economies in the region. Currencies have been linked to the US dollar in a way that hassometimes been too rigid. Interest rates cannot easily be reduced due to concern that foreign funds could flow out of the region. Meanwhile China has been competing against many South-East Asian economies in the export market.

Crisis benefits
Article Abstract:
Japanese long-dated government securities have a 1.5% yield, which is lower than any long bond ever, but demand is still strong. Japanese consumer prices could fall, and wholesale prices dropped by 2.3% in Apr 1998, the sharpest drop since 1987. Demand is not likely to push up consumer prices due to a rise in unemployment. Yields could also drop further due to Japan's banking crisis, which has meant that savers have moved to the postal bank which has savings invested by Japan's Trust FundBureau, which buys government assets.
