American takes prospects on a sample flight
Article Abstract:
American Airlines Inc's direct mail advertising features a folding film viewer that lets one experience an American Airlines flight from New York to Los Angeles. A nine-frame strip of film introduces the airline's new Flagship service, and a pamphlet gives a closer look at its Business Class Cabin. Although this is not the first time that a slide-show technique was used in direct-mail advertising, it still has enough novelty to interest prospective customers. This well-made ad was done by Bozell Inc's direct mail division in Dallas, TX.

Southwest Airlines is just 'plane' realistic
Article Abstract:
Southwestern Airlines Co's 30-second'just plane smart' advertisements make use of realism to inform viewers how low-cost flying can be obtained through their services. To achieve a realistic effect for the ads, popular executives were hired to appear in each of the spots, which were likewise given a sense of realism by the use of black and white cinema verite style and jazzy background music.
