An analysis of scanning postures among grocery cashiers and its relationship to checkstand design
Article Abstract:
Analyses of the working postures and movements of cashiers using electronic scanners, to find the impact of checkstand design, shows that the right-hand takeaway design causes substantially more non-neutral trunk postures compared to the front-facing type. The study failed to show any considerable variation in the two designs, for grasp, scanning motion and shoulder posture. The stature, order size and the type of product affect work posture while scanning. The implications for successful design changes and need for intervention are discussed.
