An experimental evaluation of instantaneous self-assessment as a measure of workload
Article Abstract:
Instantaneous self-assessment (ISA) as a measure of workload provides time-based subjective on-line ratings related to changing task demands, such as air traffic control. A comparison supports that ISA ratings were consistent with other workload evaluation techniques. However, ISA interferes with the primary task performance. Findings suggest that ISA ratings had correlation with the post-task ratings of mental workload, heart rate variability, and task performance. Further research can focus on ISA's use with complex primary tasks.

Pilot mental workload: How well do pilots really perform?
Article Abstract:
The effects of increasing mental demands on various aspects of aircrew performance, particularly the robustness of the prioritization and allocation hierarchy of aviate-navigate-communicate, are examined. The analysis has demonstrated high prioritization error rates associated with increased mental workloads and has also shown that medium and high mental workload environments severely impacted on an individual's ability to listen, comprehend, and respond to auditory messages.
