An international relations perspective on the consequences of SETI
Article Abstract:
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project has raised the question whether, like natural laws, evolutionary laws would bring about similarities in politics and ethics. Realism predicts conflictional communication between homo sapiens and extraterrestrial (ET) civilizations, based on situations similar to earthly patterns of conflict and cooperation. Idealism visualizes the strengthening of bonds between humans and ETs. Carl Sagan predicts a positive impact from ET civilization on human society.

Interpreting and reporting on a SETI discovery: we should be prepared
Article Abstract:
The governments and scientists of Earth are quite unprepared for the greatest scientific find of all time: the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence. Such news would have unheard-of social and psychological impact upon the population of the planet. For this reason, it is imperative that a Contact Verification and Interpretation Committee be in place when it should happen, ready to verify and interpret the signal from space and, subsequently, to disseminate its findings to the public in a proper fashion.

ISY, SETI and the new search for El Dorado
Article Abstract:
One of the most significant events of the 1992 International Space Year (ISY) is the ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence program (SETI). The program is being undertaken by th Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, the site of the world's largest radio telescope. SETI will scan the nearest sectors of the milky way for indications of resident intelligent life forms. Some have compared this project, and ISY itself, to the discovery of the new world in the 16th century.
