Article Abstract:
Turkish share prices rose strongly in Jan 1997, only to fall back due to concern about the country's economic and political problems. The Jan price rise was partly due to increased optimism about privatization after a court decision relating to Turk Telekom. Turkey still suffers from high interest rates and large budget and trade deficits, while inflation is at an annual level of some 80%. The government does not appear willing to tackle the deficit, which would require a reduction in support for agriculture, in addition to welfare reform.

Christmas: a big day for Turkey
Article Abstract:
Turkey's austerity measures imposed in 1994 are likely to mean defeat for the government in 1995 elections. Motherland Party appears most likely to win the election, but Refah could also make an impact. Refah is opposed to Turkey's customs agreement with the European Union. Share prices fell as the ruling coalition dissolved in Nov 1994. Share prices are likely to rise in the Motherland Party is the victor, while if Refah gains significant strength, prices are likely to fall initially, but could later rise.

Turkish delight
Article Abstract:
The Istanbul stock exchange has seen a rise in share prices in Jan 1996. An election was held at Christmas 1995, and around 20% of votes were won by True Path, Motherland and Refah. The leader of Motherland, Mesut Yilmaz, aims to win backing for a government from some True Path members of parliament. Foreign investors are concerned, but the fundamentals support the market. Interest rates are likely to drop once the political problems have been tackled.
