Sweden is now officially the only Member State of the European Union that has not reported a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Recently, Finland and Austria joined the ranks with BSE discoveries, with meat and bone meal, again, a cause for suspicion. Both Finland and Austria have been classified BSE risk level II in a report by the European Union.

In 2004, up to 13 applicant countries will join the 15 current Member States of the European Union. The European animal health and nutrition market is preparing for the change this will bring. Some of the problems that could result from this change include different livestock systems and cross-border disease control.
