Antofagasta
Article Abstract:
Antofagasta is listed on the London Stock Exchange, and is a vehicle for Luksic, a major Chilean industrial concern with interests including copper mining. The company is expanding large copper mines in Chile, scheduled to come on line in 1999. Copper prices have risen, though it is not clear how long this will last, and prices are still low, which could mean that some smaller competitors close. Chile has devalued the peso, which has helped Antofagasta, and which has cut capital costs at its mines.

RTZ
Article Abstract:
RTZ is a mining company which has been affected by problems in the world copper market. The company has also had teething problems at a new smelter for copper near Salt Lake City. A slow recovery is forecast for copper prices and there has also been a drop in aluminum prices. RTZ is likely to achieve growth through boosting production. The company's mine at Escondida, Chile, appears to have potential, and the Salt Lake City plant should be at capacity in 1997.
