GPT Ltd. produces a wide range of telecommunications equipment, including line systems, access products and synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) multiplexers. It has been estimated that the company, together with partner Siemens, had a 28% share of the global market for SDH equipment in 1994. The timing of the SDH launch was critical in achieving such a large market share. The successful introduction of GPT's SDH products lies in the company's attention to details of manufacture. To this end, concurrent working across all the design, development and test teams was essential.

Since the 1960s manufacturing businesses have had to move away from focusing on plant efficiency and optimization towards flexible, day-to-day operations, able to respond quickly to a demanding and ever-changing marketplace. In the 21st century, successful businesses must be able to compete with world-class companies and standards. To achieve this, manufacturing businesses must be anticipative, innovative and adaptive. The characteristics needed to achieve such goals are presented.

The main asset shared by all world-class companies is people. Research shows that any move by businesses to become internationally recognised should include all employees in the change process. Such involvement should include a shared vision, commitment, good communication and training. It is proposed that the first steps towards achieving true improvement are team-based projects.
