Article Abstract:
The retail sector has seen its operations transformed by the application of modern communications technology. The use of electronic point-of-sale systems illustrates the impact of such technologies on retail operations. These systems, which had become an ubiquitous presence in many UK stores by the late 1980s, have made the task of collecting and collating information so much easier, enabling managers to enhance and upgrade their stock control and distribution systems to improve store efficiency. In the future, more innovative applications of fast-evolving information technologies promise to bring new benefits to retailers that invest in them. Neural networks, for example, can be used to decide the location of stores while virtual reality programs can be used to help retailers plan out their store designs. The Internet can also be leveraged as a new marketing medium to help make home shopping a reality by the early part of the 21st century.

Technology that serves shops well. (information technology), (includes related articles) (Retailing)
Article Abstract:
Information technology is revolutionizing the retail trade and distribution industry in the UK. The retail trade is characterized by great competition and a high mortality rate, and information technology offers many firms a competitive edge by rationalizing and improving ordering, stocking, coding, and pricing. Information technology installed at the point-of-sale has made it easy for retailers to collect and collate a large amount of information that can be used to maximize their profitability. Information technology has given retailers the ability to track product sales and monitor stock depletion, which enables them to know how much stock is required on a day-by-day basis, and has given them the ability to monitor shopping patterns, which enables them to specifically tailor displays for maximum effect.
