Are you taking something for it?
Article Abstract:
The de-restriction policy adopted by UK health authorities has led to the removal of the prescription status of a good number of powerful drugs. These new nonprescription drugs include non-sedating antihistamines (Clarityn, Tiludan) and topical treatments (Vividrin, Rynacrom) that can be used to treat hay fever and anti-ulcer drugs (Tagamet and Zantac) that can be used for chronic indigestion. Other powerful drugs that are now available over-the-counter are the anti-viral drug acyclovir (Zovirax) which can be used for treating cold sores; antifungal agents (Lamisil, Daktarin) that can be used to treat athlete's foot and ringworm; and steroid creams (Lanacort, Eurax) that can be used for allergic rashes. While most of these new nonprescription drugs are generally safe, they can have toxic side effects in certain circumstances. Consumers are therefore advised to carefully consult the patient information leaflets that accompany these nonprescription drugs.

To screen or not to screen
Article Abstract:
Medical screening tests are physical examinations that are intended to detect an illness before symptoms occur. Tests that are commonly applied include those used to identify diabetes, precancerous conditions in the womb, early-stage breast cancer, high-cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. Less frequently applied tests include those used to detect coronary problems, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer. As a rule, screening should be done only among people who fall in high-risk groups for certain illnesses, such as middle-aged women in the case of cervical cancer and men over 50 in the case of prostate cancer. Moreover, people who do take medical screening tests should make sure they are properly informed about the rates of false positive or false negative results. They should also be prepared to take counseling and further treatment should the tests indicate that they are ill.
