Banking on the needs of the elderly
Article Abstract:
Demographic trends and patterns of public spending in the UK have increased the demand for space in private nursing and residential homes. The population of people over the age of 65 in the UK was 8.8 million in 1990, and it is estimated that the number of people over the age of 80 will increase 50% and number some 2.9 million by 2025. There are 3,000 private nursing homes in the UK with 88,000 beds, and there are an additional 143,000 beds in private residential homes. Local governments typically issue social security payments to cover the costs of private nursing rather than building new public homes, and the funding of private nursing through social security has increased to 1 billion pounds sterling in 1989 from 10 million pounds in 1979.

Time please for pub disposals
Article Abstract:
Profound changes in the operations of the brewing industry have occurred as a result of the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) adoption of the key measures recommended in the Monopolies and Mergers Commission's 1989 report on the industry. The DTI has ordered that all major brewers sell or lease free of the 'tie' half of their pubs over the figure of 2,000 in which they have ownership interests . The ruling affects some 10,000 pubs and has forced the major brewers to closely examine the operations of all their public houses. Those which do not measure up are being sold or transferred. The pub disposals are required to be completed by Nov 1, 1992. The ruling's impact may be substantive as it coincides with a weak property market.
