Australian Accountability
Article Abstract:
The Australian Institute of Management presents awards for outstanding annual reports from all sectors, private sector, public sector or clubs. However, very few public sector organizations received it. In 1981, following the lead of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy in the United Kingdom, the Institute of Internal Auditors of Queensland inaugurated its Queensland Public Sector Annual Report Awards. The stimulus appears to be working, as noticeable improvements of quality in public sector accounts have been developing since this award has been announced. The judging includes both financial and non-financial sections of the report. An overall winner of reports is chosen, but quality work of less outstanding levels may be awarded other positions - an award of excellence, merit or commendation. Criteria for these are listed. Awards are granted in four divisions, statutory authorities, state government departments, local authorities and other entries. Reports often appear too lengthy and too devoted to cash, as opposed to current cost accounting.

Information for the House
Article Abstract:
Edward Du Cann's speech at a conference for government accountants which centered on the issue of effective financial reporting to Parliament is discussed. Numerous facts and figures are available to the government but are not necessarily useable to Parliament in making decisions. With recession economics, more accurate decisions need to be made by the Parliament or the Executive. More appropriate accounting information is essential. To use commercial accounting practices in government across the board would be a mistake. Government information needs to be compiled to satisfy many requirements.
