Banking on the warehouse concept
Article Abstract:
Bel Air Camera & Video has opened a new superstore in Los Angeles, CA, to compete with large-format retailers. Replacing the merchandiser's smaller store, the new facility encompasses a 7,500-sq-ft main floor with a lab for film processing, a 20-foot-high open-beam ceiling and 60 feet of counter space; a mezzanine area that comprises 2,000 sq ft of office space; and outside parking space. General manager Frank Ponder reports that the new store registered revenues of slightly less than $500,000 during its 4-day grand opening in May 1998.

Mystic Color Lab, based in Mystic, CT, has implemented a 'Lean 'production process developed by the not-for-profit consulting firm CONN/STEP to increase efficiency and remain competitive. The 'Lean' process is derived from the ideas contained in the book 'Lean Thinking.' Typically, the CONN/STEP system begins in an area or department where its involvement will have the biggest impact.
