Basic instincts
Article Abstract:
Many people have an aversion to planning their finances and only take advice in an emergency. Early financial advice is important for planning the future, and shopping around allows investors to assess advisers better than if they have to use advisers in an emergency. Financial advisers may be independent, tied to a company, or part of a direct sales force. Advisers may be paid through commissions, or through fees, and those which are paid in both ways offer more flexibility, since investors may initially wish to pay through commissions and later pay through fees.

Face values
Article Abstract:
Private client stockbroking has been affected by the entry of new firms in the market in the United Kingdom. These include foreign companies such as Merrill Lynch. There is also a process of consolidation in the industry, and a number of independents have been acquired or have merged. Execution-only services are provided by new types of investment adviser, such as discount brokers and internet brokers. High commercial and ethical standards are important due to mis-selling scandals that have affected the industry.
