Tech: what's in a name?
Article Abstract:
Investors are faced with a number of funds using the term 'technology' as a marketing device, and this can be confusing. Most of these funds are relatively new, so cannot be judged in their track record. Aberdeen Technology, Scottish Equitable Technology and Henderson Global Technology have been around for longer and offer global coverage. Gartmore Techtornado is a UK fund. There are also tech tracker funds, and investment trusts, which may be trading at premiums.

Incoming tide
Article Abstract:
Split capital investment trusts include income shares, and that income can vary, which may make investors cautious. The sector has grown, and split capital trusts offer 32 residual capital and income shares and around 37 traditional income shares. Activity increased in 1998 and trusts extended their average lifespans as a result of this activity. Changes in United Kingdom capital gains tax could mean that trusts have longer lifespans, since the government aims to promote long-term investment through its tax policy.

Becoming an all-rounder
Article Abstract:
There has been an increase in funds available to investors to 1,739 in 1998 compared with 414 in 1978, and this make selecting a fund difficult. Specialist funds for particular asset classes and markets are likely to perform better than all-rounders. Investment managers for funds of funds aim to select the best specialists. Historic performance is one way of assessing a fund, though past performance does not guarantee future success. Fund of fund managers need to carry out qualitative research. Private investors can select funds in similar ways, using information from the quality financial press.
