Breaking away: former IBM partner Microsoft launches its first-ever TV campaign

Microsoft Corp will advertise on both cable and network television its Windows product in May 1982 at a cost of $8 million. The television campaign will run in tandem with advertising in magazines. The amount spent in the print media will be reduced, but total expenses will be the same. Moreover, a 100-city traveling show in Apr 1982 will promote the product. Microsoft will also sponsor workshops in Apr 1982 for advanced users of the much awaited Windows 3.1 upgrade. The company will also encourage computer manufacturers to affix its logo to their products, marketing and advertising. Dell Computer Corp, DEC and Tandy Corp have agreed to use the Windows logo.

Microsoft-Compaq venture seeks 3COM orphans

Microsoft Corp and Compaq Computer Corp have launched a promotional campaign to attract users of 3COM products. 3COM Corp has recently abandoned the network operating systems and computer server markets to concentrate on its core business. Compaq and Microsoft would give discounts amounting to $6,500 on computers, the LAN Manager and mail software. These discounts come with a free 'Upgrade Solutions' software kit valued at $2,500. They have also started a direct marketing campaign and a series of technical seminars in the US and Europe.

IBM and Microsoft turn Comdex into a marketing battlefield

International Business Machines Corp (IBM) and Microsoft Corp launched new software in time for the Comdex-Spring and Windows World computer industry trade shows last Apr. Microsoft started selling Windows 3.1 on the first day of Windows World. Meanwhile, IBM started shipping its OS/2 2.0 a week before Comdex started. The competing companies promoted their new products by using various marketing campaign strategies which included television commercials, print advertisements, special tours and customer meetings.
