Brewers ready for a stubby price war
Article Abstract:
In order to prevent a "stubby" bottle price war in leading UK supermarkets during the Christmas 1998 season, UK brewers Scottish Courage Brands (SCB) and Budweiser manufacturer, Anheuser-Busch are to launch stubbies in both the value-for-money and premium sectors, as ultra-cheap Continental stubby lagers took more than a 10% share of the market during Christmas 1997. To attract UK consumers with a wide-range of brands at competitive prices, SCB is launching a Hofmeister stubby 24-pack and is discussing the price with leading UK multiples. The launch of the Hofmeister stubby means that SCB has a stubby in all sectors of the market. Budweiser's anticipated move into stubbies for Christmas 1998 will mean that the second largest premium lager brand will be represented in all forms of existing packaging. Anheuser has been conducting a trial on a 250ml Budweiser to compete in the premium sector against Stella Artois, Kronenbourg 114 and Holsten Pils.

The Czech Republic is said to be considering plans to get official protection for its 'pilsner' lager. The pilsner lager is said to be one of the most copied beer styles in the world and has been copied by dozens of brewers around the globe, however the style of lager is named after the town of Pilsen in Bohemia where it was first developed in the 19th Century and the Czech Republic is keen to provide the lager with the same style of protection given to champagne, armagnac and cognac.
