Building on recovery
Article Abstract:
Try is a United Kingdom construction company and housebuilder, and has moved out of the real estate market. The company has boosted its housebuilding operations through the acquisition of Amey Homes. Housebuilding accounts for most of the company's profit, and Try is avoiding the London market where prices are less firm. Rising building costs do not affect Try as badly as companies operating where land costs are lower. The company's profit is forecast at 3.2 million pounds sterling for 1998 by SBC Warburg Dillon Read.

Housebuilding: doubts cast on recovery
Article Abstract:
UK housebuilders face rise rise in the cost of land linked to delays in planning approval by local government. Meanwhile the price of new houses has not risen as fast as the price of second-hand homes. The rise in the cost of land coupled with low rises for new houses affects the profitability of housebuilders, especially those with short land banks. Taylor Woodrow is investing abroad due to the high cost of land in the UK, while Wimpey faces the problem of having to replenish Tarmac's land bank.
