Business exchange: a look at American managerial styles
Article Abstract:
The increasingly international environment in which most companies do business is erasing nationally distinctive management trends, leading to the question of what is (and is not) American about US corporations' management styles. Quality control circles originated in the US., but are frequently labeled Japanese, and other management concepts thought to be American are actually borrowed from Europe or the Orient. Preceded by a brief overview of research on American management, an analysis of current trends identifies several styles as distinctive to US. management: 1. decentralization, 2. emphasis on formal business education, 3. transference of learned management skills from one corporation or industry to another, 4. reliance on short-term economic indicators and performance measurements.
