Call in the savings account detectives
Article Abstract:
Investors wanting to choose a savings account need to pick one with a good rate of interest but they also must regularly check other accounts and be ready to move their account if another bank or building society offers a better rate of interest. Savers should also realise that some institutions offer a good rate initially and then reduce it or do not offer the good rate to current customers. Choosing base-rate savings accounts or a Tessa from Abbey National which is linked to bank base rates ensures the rate that customers receive is competitive.

Pep deals for Rock members
Article Abstract:
Northern Rock will give members free stocks when it carries out a flotation in Oct 1997, and these stocks could form part of a personal equity plan (Pep). Peps offer tax-free capital growth and income, and Northern Rock stocks do not affect Pep allowances if a deadline for transferring them is met. Charges for Peps could offset the tax benefits, especially for members who still have capital gains tax allowances. Northern Rock stocks could be exchanged for a stake in a collective fund, which would reduce risk through diversification.
