Changes in cortisol secretion during shiftwork: implications for tolerance to shiftwork?
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the effects of cortisol secretion on shiftwork tolerance and circadian rhythms. Night-shift workers were investigated to analyze cortisol secretion from their saliva. The subjects' circadian rhythms were subjected to statistical analysis. Results revealed that circadian function of some of the subjects did not change suggesting that cortisol secretion on some night-shift workers does not function effectively. Furthermore, neuroticism on some workers with shifting work hours may be attributed to abnormal cortisol rhythms.

Burnout of female and male nurses in shiftwork
Article Abstract:
The occurrence of burnout in nurses working in two- and three-shift schedules is investigated. Maslach burnout inventory is used, and it has three categories: psychological fatigue, loss of work enjoyment and hardening. Results show that there are no gender differences in burnout and stress symptoms. Moreover, work enjoyment is dependent on the shift schedule, while the two other aspects of burnout are independent of the shift schedule. Lastly, active coping strategiesare more effective than passive strategies in dealing with burnout and stress.

Individual differences in tolerance to shiftwork: a review
Article Abstract:
Factors contributing to shiftwork tolerance are investigated. Results show that circadian regulation and amount of sleep are the important factors affecting tolerance to shiftwork. Depending on the workers' commitment to abnormal working hours, they can use several remarkable coping mechanisms whichpromote better circadian adjustment and the ability to sleep at unusual hours. In the process, better shiftwork tolerance is developed.
