Changes on the cards
Article Abstract:
American Express (Amex) has been the subject of takeover speculation following press reports of talks with Citicorp. The discussions were reportedly abandoned. Amex stated that it was not holding talks, though the company has not denied having held them. The cost of a takeover could amount to over $30 billion and few US companies could make an acquisition of this size. There could be a conflict of interest over Amex's charge and credit card activities and Citicorp's role as an issuer for Visa, which does not permit members to issuer cards from rivals. GE Capital and General Motors have been mentioned as possible bidders but Amex may set up a partnership instead of being involved in a takeover.

Cheap flexible friends for all sorts of borrowers
Article Abstract:
Credit cards continue to be popular and the amount borrowed with credit cards increased to 4.9 billion pounds sterling in 1998. There are more lenders now which makes choosing the right card difficult. If the balance is paid off each month the best card is one that does not charge an annual fee and provides a long interest-free period. Borrowers who carry debt forward should consider cards with low APRs, although Capital One Bank offers a competitive APR of 13.5%, interest free period of 54 days and no annual fee. The market is becoming more competitive and some issuers include loyalty schemes.

Chips will thwart the credit card crooks
Article Abstract:
Technology to tackle credit card fraud is being developed to tackle a problem that not only involves usage of stolen credit cards, since account numbers and cards may be counterfeited. Software programs can generate valid numbers for credit cards which can be used over the phone or on embossing machines. Chip technology can include usage of fingertip scans, or PIN numbers may be used, as occurs in France. The industry has to decide on the form of the technology it plans to use.
