Happy shoppers, sad retailers
Article Abstract:
Retailers have been affected by reductions in analysts' forecasts, with profit downgrades for British companies, especially in food and drugs. Companies affected include Unigate, Arcadia, Electronics Boutique, and Old English Inns. J Sainsbury has reported a drop in pre-tax profit, and Pendragon has warned of possible flat profits for 1999. Renold has reported a disappointing interim profit, and forecasts a reduction in orders from key markets in mainland Europe.
