Coalfields project finally hits a seam

The Dearne Valley Partnership is a major regeneration project for former coalfield sites in England. The project has had to tackle the problem of 10,000 jobs shed from 10 collieries, resulting in 3,000 acres of derelict terrain. The Dearne Valley is seeking to market a site at Manvers colliery to investors from the Asia-Pacific region, such as Samsung, but there have been problems in keeping to the schedule for preparing the site. These have been tackled, and some companies have been attracted.

Local government seeks to attract inward investment in the UK but has a limited budget for development. Only 2% of local authorities spent over 1 million pounds sterling on attracting investment, according to Ernst and Young. Enterprise zones, offering tax advantages, are attractive to companies. Doxford, a business park in Sunderland, northern England, has attracted 450 jobs from London Electricity, which is to relocate its customer services division to Sunderland.
