New broom picks up the thread at Coats
Article Abstract:
Coats Viyella gained a new chief executive, Michael Ost, in May 1997. The company should benefit from his review and from previous restructuring. Precision Engineering's manufacturing capacity for plastics is likely to be increased. Manufacturing costs have been cut by transferring production out of the United Kingdom, and the benefits of this should become apparent. Operating profits from clothing are forecast to recover in 1998 though a loss is expected in 1997.

The house that David built: forty years and 50 deals went in to building textiles giant Coats Viyella. Its architect, Sir David Alliance, believes that investors will shortly be able to appreciate its final design
Article Abstract:
David Alliance is chairman of Coats Viyella and his stake in the company is currently worth 9 million pounds sterling. The company employs 60,000 people, half of which are in the UK, and its nearest rival is Courtaulds Textiles. The recessions meant that there were no share price benefits following the Vantona and Viyella deals in 1975 and 1982, and shareholders have not yet seen any benefits from the major Coats Patons deal.
