Strategy and environment as determinants of performance: evidence from the Japanese machine tool industry
Article Abstract:
The influence of the environment and realized strategies on the performance of firms in the Japanese machine tool industry was examined. For the study, data on a sample of 25 firms from 1979 to 1992 were used. Results reveal that the environment and firm strategies influence the profitability and growth of the firms. However, although there was a significant relationship between firm profitability and strategic and environmental factors, only environmental factors were found to affect the growth of the firm. Moreover, capital costs and technological change were not found to be negatively related with profitability, which is a direct contrast to US studies. Instead, the study found that technological change positively influences firm growth.
