Competing in the new economy: managing out of bounds
Article Abstract:
Traditional management practices and philosophies are becoming obsolete. As business enters the information age, old management styles and tenets, which used to be relevant under the machine age, are becoming useless. However, new management practices have not been invented for the information age. In light of this, businesses should confine themselves to asking pertinent questions, the answers to which can lead to the identification of correct management solutions. These businesses should take into consideration several developments in the environment. These include the changing boundaries of authority, the blurring boundaries of control, the evolving boundaries of loyalty and affiliation, the fading boundaries of experience, the irrelevance of national boundaries, the shifting boundaries between the physical and the intellectual, and the changing boundaries between the present and the future.
