Competition among trading venues: information and trading on electronic communications networks
Article Abstract:
A comparison of Nasdaq market makers and electronic communications networks (ECNs) shows that ECN trades yield more private information and produce greater permanent price impacts than market-maker trades. ECNs however have increased ex ante trading costs, as market makers can internalize or preference less informed trades and produce better executions.
