'Dallas' with the gloves on
Article Abstract:
Barry Hearn is a trained chartered accountant who left the profession in the 1970s and has since become one of the top sports promoters in the UK. Hearn began his career as an articled clerk at a small Essex firm in 1966. He joined Thomas McLintock in 1970 and rose quickly to management rank. In 1973, he became the finance director of Kensal House Investments, a fashion house that later diversified into the leisure business. It was then that Hearn first got involved with sports promotion. This happened when Kensal bought Lucania, which owned a chain of snooker halls. Hearn subsequently got deeply involved with the popularization of snooker on television. He went solo in the mid-1970s, setting up his agency Matchroom and becoming the manager of several top snooker players. In the late 1980s, Hearn got involved with boxing, becoming the manager of world champion Chris Eubank. He hopes to eventually expand into soccer and become an agent for top soccer players.
