De Gruchy looks a tempting Jersey target
Article Abstract:
De Gruchy's activities include shop fitting, automobile retailing, and the company also has a department store. De Gruchy performed well in 1997, even when a pension fund surplus refund is taken into account, with a rise in pre-tax profit of 23% to 3.2 million pounds sterling. The department store and shop fitting business both performed well, but the motor vehicle dealer did not perform as well. The company is 28.8% owned by Merchant Retail, and there is speculation about a possible bid.

City still checking Sainsbury out over Star buy
Article Abstract:
The acquisition of Star Markets by J. Sainsbury will boost the company's position in Boston and New England. Critics argue that the Star Markets acquisition has been made too late and is too minor to give a significant boost to performance. Pricing in US markets tends to be more aggressive than in UK markets.
