Dearing Report: the author replies
Article Abstract:
The main proposals of the Dearing Report on accounting standards and the creation of a Financial Reporting Council (FRC) have been accepted by the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies and the UK Department of Trade and Industry. Sir Ron Dearing, author of the report, believes that there should be a wide base of funding to ensure the independence of the FRC and the commitment of the financial community. Dearing feels that government should not have sole authority for appointing members of the FRC. Dearing believes that the government does not exist to serve the accounting profession or the financial community and represents interests distinct from those of accountants. Dearing recommends that members should be nominated by accountancy and other interested groups.
