Defence bids in suspense
Article Abstract:
Thomson is to be privatized by the French government and there are two serious bids. These are from Lagardere and Alcatel Alsthom. Alcatel is seen as more likely to succeed, and would take on Thomson's consumer electronics side, Thomson Multimedia, which Lagardere would sell. There is concern that Alcatel needs to focus on its recovery program and the acquisition could hinder this. There is a political dimension to the privatization since it involves activities which the French government sees as important.

BAe/Marconi merger pushes Euro defence onto the runway
Article Abstract:
Analysts believe that GEC has benefited from the British Aerospace plan to take over Marconi Electronic Systems, as it will own 36.7% of BAe's shares following the merger and will have 440 million pounds sterling of principal and interest from loan stock. France is now keen to match BAe with a link between Aerospatiale and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace (DASA), having sales of 14 billion pounds sterling, compared to the combined turnover of BAe and Marconi of 12 billion pounds sterling plus.
