Does the Navy need the 1700 community?
Article Abstract:
Questions continue to persist about the viability and relevance of the 1700 restricted line officer community four years after the 1100 general unrestricted line officer community was folded into this new fleet support group in 1995. Uneasiness remains among many 1700 community members as to whether the decision to create it was made primarily to appease the vast majority of community members, who are women, after the Tailhook incident. Its mission and vision must be reviewed to determine the 1700 community's proper place in the Navy's future.
