Double standards
Article Abstract:
Both management consultants and their clients have responsibilities to perform in order to assure the quality and success of consultancy projects. However, patrons continue to be unmindful of their substantial role in such programs. Although attempts by the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) to educate customers through quarterly clinics in Scotland did not produce any positive result, advice and information are available from such sources as IMC guidelines and ethical-and-professional standards. Frontline Chmn Dennis Hardie suggests a four-point exercise that clients may use in dealing with consultants: rationalization for hiring a consultant, determining services needed, involvement in the project and resisting intimidation by consultants. Small companies may also seek the advice of organizations that supervise consultancy works such as the Enterprise Support.

Consulting the doctor
Article Abstract:
Chartered accountant Ken Scobie is in the business of helping troubled companies avert or recover from financial distress. His numerous successes in engineering the rescue of failing businesses include the recovery of Vavasour South Africa and the equipment firm Blackwood Hodge PLC. According to Scobie, there is no single prescribed approach to company doctoring but it does require a great deal of common sense. He also admits that his kind of job requires leadership ability as well as the ability to inspire confidence among banks, shareholders and employees in the eventual recovery of client companies. The Scottish financial expert is presently involved in planning the recovery of the heavily indebted leisure and property company Brent Walker Group PLC.
