EMI
Article Abstract:
EMI is a content owner in the recorded music industry, and should benefit from developments in the way that music is delivered. The Secure Digital Music Initiative is a drive against piracy that has been organized by the industry, and a standard for secure music should be agreed by year-end 1999. This should lead to a change in music distribution, with a drop in costs and the potential for obscure recordings to be released. Tracks can be downloaded in stores, and the internet could account for 25% of music sales after five years.

All that scratching makes Thorn itch
Article Abstract:
Thorn-EMI is a UK retailer and music publisher which has sold more than 75 businesses to focus on TV rental, music production and music retailing. The cost of this restructuring has affected the group's profits and a demerger is unlikely in the short term, though is likely in the longer term. EMI is not part of a large record company, which leaves it exposed in the music business. Thorn-EMI shares have performed well and investors are recommended to sell in Mar 1995.
