Early regulatory actions by the SEC: an institutional theory perspective on the dramaturgy of political exchanges
Article Abstract:
An examination of the development of the SEC and the impact of its regulatory actions on establishing the institution's legitimacy in Congress can provide valuable insights into the social-political dimension of accounting practice and regulation. Early pronouncements issued by the SEC reflect its use of dramaturgy of ceremonial exchanges to acquiesce to legislative mandates and in effect establish legitimacy and therefore survive. Such a dramaturgy of political exchanges proved effective in the SEC's efforts to support Price Waterhouse Co. and the accounting profession in general. It is also apparent in the institution's handling of the McKesson and Robbins litigation. The SEC's formative years can thus be described as profoundly political.

The FASB's executive stock option controversy supports increasing the research and teaching of political accounting
Article Abstract:
The heated debate over the Financial Accounting Standard Board's Executive Stock Option Exposure Draft and its Discussion Memorandum may be a sign of the increasing politicalization of accounting practice research as well as the standard setting process. Therefore, there may be a need for the accounting community to undergo some political training. Recognizing the emerging body of knowledge within the field of accounting as a legitimate discipline and calling it Political Accounting will facilitate the efforts of accounting academics to examine the impact of politics on accounting issues. Consequently, both accounting academics and practitioners will be able to contribute to the improvement and self-regulation of the profession.

Theory and politics: lessons from feminist economics
Article Abstract:
Both the academic discipline of accounting and critical accounting theories are to blame for critical accounting's failure as a critical endeavour. The ultimate critical theory should not be sought as a number of different theories can be applied, with feminist economic theory one of the options for accounting development. No single position on feminist theory should be considered the best although accountants should consider them all important options.
