Effectiveness of rest pauses and cooling in alleviation of heat stress during simulated fire-fighting activity
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of subjecting fire-fighters to intermittent fan cooling throughout the course of a fire-fighting activity in minimizing physiological stress. The physiological responses observed using this method were heart rate, rectal temperature, tympanic temperature, oxygen intake, dehydration and skin temperature. The study proved that short rest pauses alone were not sufficient in reducing cardiovascular and thermal strain. The fire-fighters need to remove their protective clothing while cooling off with a powerful fan.

How can ergonomics influence design? Moving from research findings to future systems
Article Abstract:
The instances of three different strands that are experimental, ethnomethodological and surveys, of ergonomics research on paper flight strips in air traffic control are assessed. The assessment is regarding the way in which they analytically confront future work and how they make the findings relevant or credible with respect to future work.

Fire fighting and its influence on the body
Article Abstract:
A study conducted to measure the temperatures and radiant heat loads during simulated fire fighting situations in training buildings and in heated rooms is presented. The sweat rate and the core temperature rise of 17 fire fighters during practice exercise is proposed.
