Emu benefits
Article Abstract:
Morgan Stanley argues that planned European monetary union (Emu) should benefit European share prices. Interest rates should remain low and the euro currency looks set to drop in value in relation to the US dollar. This would help companies competing in US markets. Productivity, rationalization and reform of regulations will have to be used to improve the ability of European companies to compete since they cannot devalue their currencies within Europe. German companies may benefit from a lower currency value and the UK, Spain and Italy may benefit from lower interest rates.

Wait for the good times
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock warrants have dropped in price due to problems in stock markets in Sep 1998, and this drop had tended to affect stock warrants as a whole, just as stocks as a whole have been hit. Short-life issues offer particular risks, while long-life warrants offer investors some time to wait for a rally. A sustained improvement may not occur for some time. The drop in value of pound sterling in relation to some currencies in mainland Europe should help manufacturers and raise the value of overseas holdings of some investment trusts.

Your money, their rights
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock issues can be carried out in a number of ways, including rights issues which allow companies listed on the stock market to raise more capital. Existing stockholders can purchase more stocks in line with their holdings. Institutional investors tend to underwrite rights issues. Investors should assess why a company is seeking to raise funds and whether it has a good track record. The size of discounts and the tax implications of buying more stocks should also be taken into account.
