Environmental technologies and competitive advantage
Article Abstract:
Environmental technologies are production equipment, methods and processes, product designs, and product delivery mechanisms that save energy and natural resources, reduce the environmental load of human activities, and help protect the natural environment. Because environmentalism has become a prime concern for most consumers, companies that make use of these environmental technologies have a higher probability of gaining competitive advantage than those that do not. The many benefits of implementing these environmental technologies are cost reduction, revenue enhancement, better supplier ties, quality improvement, competitive edge, liability reduction, social and health benefits and improved public image. Nevertheless, there are many barriers to the successful introduction of environmental technologies. These include costs of developing solutions, lack of know-how and environmental information, organizational inertia, and regulations.
