Estate programs make updating estate plans easier
Article Abstract:
Estate taxation is highly specialized, and clients' situations are not static and require periodic reviews. Estate tax computer software programs make calculating alternatives and updating estate plans easier. Two estate tax accounting software programs are BNA Software's (Washington, DC) Estate Tax Spreadsheet and ViewPlan, Inc's Estate Forecast Model. Estate Tax Spreadsheet does not require a hard disk, can be customized simply, and has an impressive number of standard features, including planning for individuals and families, generation-skipping tax planning, and multiple plans. Estate Forecast Model is an integrated estate planning tool that is user-friendly, has good documentation, and generates reports that clearly illustrate the flow of assets in plans.

Depreciation calculations can be simplified considerably with software
Article Abstract:
The BNA Fixed Asset Management System is a computer software program for calculating depreciation in financial and tax reporting and for calculating the alternative minimum tax (AMT). The program requires a computer with a hard disk and a minimum of 640K of RAM and a printer with 132-column capability. Installation of the system is simple and the program can be installed on most local area networks. The system provides a wide range of standard reports, including book, federal, and state depreciation and summary reports, AMT depreciation reports, and gain or loss reports. The program's help screens are very good, the instruction manual is helpful, and the system allows the user to customize reports if the standard reports do not fit the user's needs.

Software programs allow tax planning for individuals
Article Abstract:
Two tax preparation software programs, Best Programs' Tax Partner Planner (TPP)and BNA Software's Income Tax Spread Sheet (ITS), allow tax planning for individuals. TPP requires an IBM-compatible with a minimum of 640 KB of RAM and a hard disk using DOS 3.0 or higher. ITS requires 512 KB of RAM and can run on a dual 5.25 inch diskette system. TPP is user-friendly, its help screens and manual are easy to follow, and it can generate a large number of reports. The weakness of TPP is that the size of files is limited. ITS offers the advantages of state tax planning, it offers more technical knowledge in its manual and help screens, and it provides customized worksheets. The weakness of ITS is that it is very technical.
